Stastny comes up short

Stastny comes up shortEurolanche brings you the daily recap of everything important that happened at the Olympics in Russia involving Avalanche players.

The Olympic tournament is nearing its end, with the bronze medal game being played today, featuring Team USA and Finland. Avalanche forward Paul Stastny was being cheered on by his father Peter from the stands at the Bolshoy Ice Dome.

Both teams were playing at a high tempo right from the start, resulting in several good chances in the first period. Nevertheless, the first period ended without any team getting on the scoresheet. The scoreless tie was broken in the second period, Finnish legend Teemu Selanne being the one who opened the score of the game. The Finns scored their second goal of the game just 11 second after Selänne got them on the board, as Jussi Jokinen got „Suomi“ up by two. Although Team USA had several scoring chances, they just couldn’t get anything past Finnish goalie Tuukka Rask. With the third period underway, Finland’s Juusa Hietanen beat Jonathan Quick on the powerplay to make it 3:0. Moments later, the seemingly ageless Selanne got another powerplay marker for Finland, the Finns now scoring 4 unanswered goals. The match was slowly getting out of hand for the US and Olli Maatta sealed the deal with another powerplay goal for Finland, the final score being 5:0.

Paul Stastny had a total ice time of 10 minutes and 13 seconds. He didn’t get a shot on goal and won all three of his faceoffs. Paul Stastny goes back to Denver without a medal.
