Avs select Jost in first round
BCHL MVP Headed To University of North Dakota This Fall
The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club selected forward Tyson Jost (JO-st) with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft held tonight at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.
Jost, 18, was named the British Columbia Hockey League Most Valuable Player this past season after tallying 104 points (42 goals, 62 assists) in 48 games for the Penticton Vees. His 62 assists led the BCHL, while his 104 points ranked third. Jost’s 2.17 points-per-game average was the highest in the league. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound center has committed to the University of North Dakota (NCHC) for this upcoming fall.
“We’re thrilled to be adding Tyson to our organization,” Avalanche Director of Amateur Scouting Alan Hepple said of Jost, who was also named the Canadian Junior Hockey League National Player of the Year. “He controls the puck, has great offensive ability and makes players around him better. He is a good passer, see’s the ice very well. He doesn’t get intimidated, plays a big game and plays with lots of heart. And certainly his skill level is over the top.”
In addition to leading Penticton in assists, Jost finished second on the Vees in points, goals and game-winning tallies (7). He shared the club lead in power-play assists with 30. The St. Albert, Alberta native added 14 points (6g/8a) in 11 playoff games, finishing third on the club in postseason scoring.
Jost captained Team Canada at the 2016 IIHF Under-18 World Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he led the entire tournament in scoring with 15 points (6g/9a) in seven games. His 15 points established a Canadian record at that event, surpassing the previous mark set by Connor McDavid (14) in 2013. Jost was selected as the tournament’s “Best Forward” and was named to the All-Star Team.
Prior to the 2015-16 campaign, Jost helped Canada’s Under-18 team capture the gold medal at the 2015 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup tournament. He also won gold with Canada at the 2015 World Junior A Challenge. Jost was rated No. 16 among North American Skaters in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings for the 2016 Draft.
During his first season with Penticton in 2014-15, Jost helped the Vees capture the Fred Page Cup as BCHL champions. He recorded 45 points (23g/22a) in 46 games during the regular season and added 14 points—including a team-high 10 goals—in 21 postseason contests. He was named to the BCHL’s All-Rookie Team.
Jost collected 88 points (44g/44a) in 36 regular-season games in 2013-14 before leading the Okanagan Rockets to a third-place finish at the TELUS Cup, Canada’s national Midget AAA championship.
