Avs missing top two scorers vs. Flyers

Season series: Matt Duchene scored two goals and Reto Berra made 25 saves in the Colorado Avalanche's 4-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center on Nov. 10.
Flyers team scope: Philadelphia took a day off after a 3-2 shootout loss at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday finished a back-to-back set. The Flyers held a 2-0 lead until the Blue Jackets scored two goals in the final 64 seconds of the third period. The one point the Flyers got was enough to push them past the Detroit Red Wings for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the Eastern Conference, but the players didn't feel all that happy about it. "We gave away the extra point there," goalie Steve Mason, who made an NHL career-best 51 saves, said Tuesday, according to CSNPhilly.com. Mason could start his fourth straight game unless coach Dave Hakstol wants to have rookie Anthony Stolarz make his NHL debut. Stolarz was recalled from Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League on Sunday.
Avalanche team scope: Forwards Duchene and Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado's leading scorers, worked out off the ice Wednesday, according to the Denver Post, but neither will play because of knee injuries. They also are expected to be out Saturday against the Minnesota Wild. One of the players the Avalanche will be looking to for extra offense is forward Shawn Matthias. Acquired in a Feb. 21 trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Matthias has three goals in 11 games with Colorado; he had six goals in 51 games with the Maple Leafs. "It's been a great fit," Matthias told the Post. "I fit in well with the style of play and the guys. It's been a good experience, a good opportunity, and this is a good team and I'm playing with two great hockey players." Matthias has been playing left wing on a line with center Carl Soderberg and right wing Gabriel Landeskog.
