Berra to start again for Avs vs Bruins

Season series: The Boston Bruins earned their first victory of the season in their first road game, and fourth game overall, against the Colorado Avalanche in Denver Oct. 14. Forward Jimmy Hayes had a goal and three assists for Boston, which limited Colorado to 22 shots on goal and chased Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov in the second period. Forward Ryan Spooner added a goal and an assist for the Bruins, and defenseman Zdeno Chara had two assists.
Avalanche (5-9-1) team scope: Colorado plays the second of a seven-game road trip. Varlamov injured a groin muscle Tuesday at the morning skate prior to the Avalanche's 4-0 win against the Philadelphia Flyers, coach Patrick Roy said Wednesday. Reto Berra, who made 25 saves to earn the shutout Tuesday, will start for the third straight game. Berra, who is 2-3-0 in six appearances this season, leads the NHL in goals-against average (1.50) and save percentage (.952), and Roy told the Denver Post it will be difficult to take him out of the net if he keeps playing well. Goalie Calvin Pickard was recalled from San Antonio of the American Hockey League. Center John Mitchell, who has missed four games with an oblique muscle injury, could return against the Bruins.
Bruins (7-6-1) team scope: Forward David Pastrnak has a non-displaced fracture of his left foot, general manager Don Sweeney said Wednesday. Pastrnak missed the past four games with what the Bruins first called a bruised foot, sustained when he was hit by a shot in a game against the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 27. The fracture did not show up on an X-ray at first, but was revealed after a CT scan. "The initial X-rays we had were normal," Sweeney said in video posted on the Bruins website. "We waited for swelling to go down. The symptoms were still persisting, so we went to have a more definitive CT scan and it did reveal a small non-displaced crack in an awkward location, so we have to give him some time." Sweeney said there is no timetable for Pastrnak's return, but no surgery will be required, just more rest. Defenseman Torey Krug missed practice Wednesday for the second straight day. The Bruins said the absences were for maintenance and status is uncertain. Defenseman Dennis Seidenberg took part in 3-on-3 contact drills in practice and is getting closer to a return after back surgery in September.
