Ducks, seeking first win, face Avs

Season series: The Anaheim Ducks won two of three games against the Colorado Avalanche in 2014-15. Forwards Corey Perry, Jiri Sekac and Rickard Rakell each had two goals for Anaheim. Center Matt Duchene and defenseman Tyson Barrie each had three points for Colorado.
Avalanche team scope: Backup goalie Reto Berra will start after Semyon Varlamov allowed five goals on 19 shots in 35:32 in a 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday. Coach Patrick Roy said he discussed carelessness with the puck at practice Thursday. "I look at our structure, I think it's pretty good," Roy told the Avalanche website. "If you're looking at the game against Boston, they didn't beat us; we beat ourselves. We had bad tracking on the first goal. If you're looking at goal No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6, they're all giveaways. And looking at them, they're doing nothing very fabulous out there; we just give the puck away." Captain Gabriel Landeskog is off to the best start of his NHL career with four goals and two assists. The Avalanche have scored on five of 10 power plays.
Ducks team scope: Anaheim didn't practice Thursday following a 4-0 home loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday. They instead watched video to try to figure out what went wrong. "Let's go home and think about what happened," coach Bruce Boudreau told the Ducks website Thursday, "and we'll have the lineup on the board tomorrow. Just come to play." Boudreau added, "The tactic before was hard work on the ice. Now it's about mental work off the ice." The Ducks can blame their power play for their slow start; they are 0-for-6. Goalie Frederik Andersen has a 1.40 goals-against average and .956 save percentage in three games; he relieved backup Anton Khudobin against Arizona after Khudobin allowed three goals on eight shots in 12:53.
