Season series: The Colorado Avalanche won two of three games against the Vancouver Canucks last season, with one of the victories coming in overtime. Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov earned both victories with a 1.98 goals-against average and .944 save percentage.

Canucks team scope: Vancouver ended a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 win against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday and will be playing its third road game in four nights. The Canucks finally got some secondary scoring, with Chris Higgins, Nick Bonino, Linden Vey and Jannik Hansen each scoring his second goal of the season. Goalie Ryan Miller rebounded, giving up one goal after allowing five in 21 minutes against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday. Eddie Lack relieved Miller then and could start this game.

Avalanche team scope: Varlamov is expected to play after missing three games with a groin injury. He is looking for his first win after leading the NHL with 41 last season. He's 0-2-1 with a 3.80 GAA and .910 save percentage. "I can tell you I feel good right now," Varlamov told the Avalanche website Thursday. "I'm rested. I'm ready to go. I'm healthy." Defenseman Zach Redmond could make his Avalanche debut in place of Ryan Wilson, who has a shoulder injury. Forward Nathan MacKinnon does not have a goal; only Alex Tanguay (three), Matt Duchene (two) and Gabriel Landeskog (two) have more than one.
