Avs support Hockey Fights Cancer

The annual campaign, scheduled October 20-November 17, 2014, is supported by all NHL teams. Each club designates one home game as its Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night.  The Thursday, November 6, contest between the Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs at Pepsi Center is the Avalanche’s designated Hockey Fights Cancer game.

“Over the years, our hockey family – fans, players, Club personnel, broadcast partners – has continuously shown their relentless spirit in helping one another in the fight against cancer,” said Ken Martin Jr., NHL Vice President of Cause Marketing. “The NHL is proud to join forces with its hockey community to help give back and support those who need it most.” 

Colorado Avalanche support includes:

Oct. 23: Break the Ice – Approximately 30 pediatric cancer patients and their siblings from Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation join Avalanche forwards Matt Duchene and Alex Tanguay, along with Avalanche Mascot Bernie and Ice Girls, for a skating clinic at Pepsi Center. The clinic takes place from 4:30 5:30 p.m.

Oct. 25-26: Hockey Fights Cancer Skates at Pepsi Center – throughout the weekend, hockey teams and associations are partnering with 13 cancer affiliated non-profit organizations in providing access to Pepsi Center ice. Activities range from family skate/broomball games to the Dawg Nation Survivor Hockey Game whose participants are survivors of, or are currently battling cancer, or other life-threatening diseases.            

Nov. 6: Avalanche vs. Toronto Maple Leafs at Pepsi Center has been designated as the Avalanche Hockey Fights Cancer game.  Special activities at the game include:

Avalanche Youth Skater is eight-year-old Laird KrodelSmith of Boulder, nominated by the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, an official non-profit of HFC. At four years ofage, KrodelSmith was diagnosed with Burkitt’s Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. Following initial surgery and five months of chemotherapy at Children’s Hospital Colorado, KordelSmith has been cancer-free for three years. 

Atrium Lighting – The Grand Atrium lobby will be lit in lavender throughout the game.

Check presentation – On behalf of NHL/NHLPA, the Colorado Avalanche will present a $5,000 check to the Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation in support of activities and programs for pediatric cancer patients at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children.

Avalanche Coaching Staff and Broadcasters will wear the official Sportin’ Styles Hockey Fights Cancer lavender (which represents all cancers) necktie during the game. Throughout the month, all players are wearing a Hockey Fights Cancer decal on their helmets.

Auction – Avs fans will have the opportunity to purchase limited edition lavender Avalanche jerseys worn by players during pre-game skate at Pepsi Center on November 6.  On-line bidding available at www.coloradoavalanche.com

Retail – Avs fans will have the opportunity to support Hockey Fights Cancer with the purchase of limited edition HFC merchandise.
