Avalanche signs Iginla

“We are excited about Jarome Iginla becoming a member of the Avalanche,” said Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic.  “Jarome’s track record speaks for itself.  He is one of the top goal scorers of all time, as well as a great leader.  His addition will bolster our offense.” 

Iginla, who turns 37 today (born July 1, 1977), has amassed 1,167 career points—including 560 goals—in 1,310 career regular season games.  His 560 goals are tied with Guy Lafleur for 24th place on the NHL’s all-time list, while his 1,167 career points rank 50th on the NHL’s all-time scoring list. 

Among active players (at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season), only Jaromir Jagr (705) and Teemu Selanne (684) had more goals than Iginla, and only Jagr (1755), Selanne (1457) and Joe Thornton (1194) had more points. 

Iginla recorded 30 goals and 31 assists for 61 points in 78 games for the Boston Bruins this past season.  His 30 goals tied Patrice Bergeron for the team lead, while his 61 points finished third.  It marked his 12th career 30-goal campaign.  Iginla finished tied for fourth in the NHL in plus/minus (+34) and tied for seventh in game-winning goals (8). 

Selected by Dallas in the first round (11th overall) of the 1995 Entry Draft, Iginla will be embarking upon his 18th NHL season this fall.  He spent his first 15-and-a-half seasons with Calgary before joining Pittsburgh at the end of 2012-13 and Boston last year.  

The Edmonton, Alberta native led the NHL with 52 goals and 96 points in 2001-02, capturing the Rocket Richard Trophy and Art Ross Trophy.  He won the 2002 Lester B. Pearson Award as the NHLPA’s MVP and was a finalist for the Hart Trophy as league MVP that same year.  He was also finalist for the Hart in 2007-08 and captured the Rocket Richard Trophy with a league-high tying 41 goals in 2003-04. 

Iginla was named to the NHL’s First All-Star Team in 2001-02, 2007-08 and 2008-09, and was named to the NHL’s Second All-Star Team in 2003-04.  He was selected to the NHL All-Rookie Team in 1996-97.   The right winger has played in six All-Star Games (2002-04, 2008-09, 2012). 

Iginla has appeared in 81 career playoff games, registering 37 goals and 31 assists for 68 points.  He helped lead Calgary to the 2004 Stanley Cup Final, where the Flames lost to Tampa Bay in Game 7. 

Internationally, Iginla helped Team Canada win the gold medal at both the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, and the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.  He also represented Canada at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, Italy.
