Varlamov will play for team Russia on WC

Semyon
Varlamov was in the
last season the goalie No. 1 of the Colorado Avalanche. He played in 35 games and
had record 11-21-3. Surely he had a tough season, because the defense of
the Avs wasn’t working well at all.
Today the
Russian national team announced their nomination for the upcomming World Cup.
The goalie No.1 will be Ilya Bryzgalov, as we informed you already. Sergei
Bobrovsky was supposed to be his backup, but he excused himself for
being too tired. So as the backup goalie was picked Avalanche goalie
Semyon Varlamov. According to Sport-Express Bryzgalov has been guaranteed as
the No. 1 goalie. Varlamov wasn’t originally invited because he is supposed to
be the goalie No.1 for the Olympic Tournament in Sochi 2014.
Varlamov
played on the previous WC and won the Gold medal with team Russia. He
played in 8 games and his GAA was 1.77. He was also in the All-Star team of the
WC. This year WC will be Varlamov’s third. Varlamov is the last Avalanche
player announced to play for his home country on the WC. Jan Hejda will
play for the Czech republic, Paul Stastny, Aaron Palushaj, Matt Hunwick
and Erik Johnson will represent USA, Matt Duchene and Ryan O’Reilly
will play for team Canada. Joe Sacco, the ex-Avs head coach and his
assistant Tim Army will coach the US team. Also, the Avs players from
minor leagues will play, Thomas Pöck (Lake Erie Monsters) for Austria, Markus Lauridsen (Denver Cutthroats /
Lake Erie Monsters) for Denmark and of course Jonas Holos for Norway.
