Trip of US fan to Europe: Romania

Nice short flight from Vienna to Bucharest, there is still some snow in the mountains I see. There is, however, no snow in Bucharest, just copius amounts of sunshine and humidity. Here my friend Robert Ciubotaru meets me at the airport, it’s been two and half years but seems like I just saw him yesterday. Off thru Bucharest to his place in the suburbs for a quick refreshment break of Horinca (also a plum brandy). Thank you Robert, I wish I could have taken the bottle with me… before we head to Ostfest! This takes place outside the Romexpo building for an open air concert with W.A.S.P, Megadeth and Motorhead, among local Romainian metal band offerings. Hot, sweaty, and a great show! Sample local flavors of mititei (great snack) along with beer, then afterward to downtown to relax watching the people pass by.
Next day we visit Dimitrie Gusti, the village museum in Bucharest, which showcases traditional housing types from throughout Romania, also there are water powered devices for managing everything from producing wool, to washing clothes, retrieving water from wells, a ferris wheel, and something that looked like a motorcycle that neither of us could quite figure the purpose of. Very interesting museum. Then we are off to the city center for a walk to some important sites, thru the Piaţa Palatului where Ceauşescu began his short flight and departure from power in December 1989.
The famous “potato on a stick” sculpture is interesting…Stop for an ice cream made with cantaloupe, unusual, but very tasty. Dinner is lasagna and nice cold Heineken, the good style made in Romania, nice job guys. We have a nice relaxing evening in the city center restaurant area watching the sights.
In the morning, a tasty breakfast of meats and cheeses, a couple more samples of Horinca for the road and it’s back to the airport. I snap a couple pictures outside Robert’s place and we head out. Too short a visit, but a nice one. Excellent visit Robert! And hey, I’m sure they will have your remodel finished in two weeks…
Board the plane for the ride back to Vienna. Short ride back and out to the bus station for the ride to Czech.
Going thru my bag to get things ready for the trip I come to a bad conclusion…I cannot locate my camera…when I put it in my pocket it must have gotten lost somewhere along the route. I’m not upset about the camera, it can be replaced, and many of the photos are of things which I can find on-line, but the loss of the photos with my friends is the worst part.
It’s time to board the bus toward Brno now.
