Backlund extends streak in Flames win

Mikael Backlund scored in his fifth straight game to help the Calgary Flames to a 4-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.

Kris Versteeg, Alex Chiasson and Johnny Gaudreau also scored, and Brian Elliott made 17 saves for the Flames (21-17-2), who have won four of the past five games and 11 of the past 15. Elliott has won five straight starts.

"It's great," Backlund said. "It's always fun winning. It's the best part of this game. That's what we're here for, to win games. It makes life a lot easier if you're winning."

Patrick Wiercioch scored and Calvin Pickard made 33 saves for the Avalanche (12-25-1), who have lost five straight games and 10 of the past 11. Colorado is last in the Western Conference with 25 points.

"We've been pressing and when you're pressing, you see a guy open and you kind of double clutch," Avalanche forward Jarome Iginla said. "You're just not letting it happen. It's a quick game, you've got to let it happen and play with confidence. We're battling that right now."

Versteeg gave the Flames a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 15:25 of the first period. Backlund also scored with the man-advantage to put Calgary up 2-0 with 2:40 remaining in the second. The goal was his 200th NHL point.

Pickard made the initial save on Mark Giordano's first shot, but Backlund scored on the rebound to extend his career-high goal streak. He has six goals and three assists during the stretch.

"It's a nice milestone to hit," Backlund said. "Looking back when I was drafted you never knew if you'd get to play 400 games and score 200 points. I want to push to get better. I want to try and keep doing that."

Backlund is the first Flames player since Curtis Glencross to score in five consecutive games. Glencross scored in seven straight from Feb. 27-March 11, 2012. James Neal of the Nashville Predators has the NHL's longest streak this season at six games, from Nov. 5-17, 2016.

"This is the best I've seen him in his career," Giordano said. "That's saying a lot because he has been really good the last couple years. He's a two-way centerman who doesn't get the acknowledgement all the time because he doesn't have the high-end numbers offensively. This year things are going in for him."

Chiasson gave Calgary a 3-0 lead at 13:25 of the third after converting a setup by TJ Brodie. Gaudreau scored at 14:09 on a 5-on-3 power play.

Wiercioch scored with 1:25 remaining.
