Philipp Grubauer, Caps shut out Avs

Philipp Grubauer made 18 saves for his first NHL shutout when the Washington Capitals defeated the Colorado Avalanche 3-0 at Verizon Center on Tuesday.
T.J. Oshie scored twice, and Alex Ovechkin had a goal for the Capitals (2-0-1).
Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves in for Colorado (2-1-0).
Ovechkin made it 1-0 at 15:44 of the first period with a power-play goal, scoring from his usual spot in the left circle off a slap pass from Dmitry Orlov, beating Varlamov short side. It was Ovechkin's first and the Capitals' first power-play goal of the season.
Oshie made it 2-0 with his power-play goal at 11:32 of the second period. On a give-and-go, Nicklas Backstrom fed Oshie from behind the net and Oshie scored top shelf on Varlamov from the slot. The goal was Oshie's first of the season.
Oshie gave the Capitals a 3-0 lead at 13:35 of the third period. Evgeny Kuznetsov poked the puck up to Ovechkin on the rush. He took a shot that was blocked by Varlamov, and Oshie scored on the rebound.
Grubauer, 24, played his 43rd NHL game.
Brett Connolly made his season debut with the Capitals. Cody McLeod made his season debut for the Avalanche.
