Khudobin, Canes stay hot, defeat Avs

Victor Rask and Elias Lindholm scored in the shootout to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win against the Colorado Avalanche AT PNC Arena on Tuesday.
The Hurricanes (14-24-5) have earned points in five of their past six games (4-1-1). The Avalanche have lost the first two games of a five-game road trip.
Carolina goalie Anton Khudobin made 28 saves for his third straight win after starting the season 0-8-2.
Trailing 2-0 after two periods, Colorado (18-17-9) chipped away at the lead 25 second into the third period. Alex Tanguay and Jarome Iginla worked the puck behind the net before Matt Duchene's shot near the right post fluttered over Khudobin's blocker.
Forward John Mitchell tied the game at 10:05 with an unassisted goal. After Carolina's defense collapsed to the slot, Mitchell sent a wrist shot under Khudobin.
The Hurricanes dominated the first period before scoring on Jordan Staal's first goal of the season at 14:05. Defenseman Ryan Murphy sent Staal up ice on a give-and-go before taking a return pass and setting up Staal for the goal in the slot. Staal was playing in his seventh game since returning from a broken leg.
Calvin Pickard kept the Avalanche in the game, stopping 44 shots. He stopped Jay McClement on a shot and a rebound early in the period, then fought off Elias Lindholm coming down the slot.
Carolina outshot Colorado 20-9 in the first period.
The Hurricanes pushed the lead to 2-0 early in the second period on Patrick Dwyer's fourth goal of the season. Brad Malone fed Dwyer, who made a move in the slot and used defenseman Nate Guenin as a screen to beat Pickard at 6:03.
Colorado had several chances in the second period, but couldn't score. Duchene got behind the defense before lifting a backhand shot off the crossbar. Forward Nathan MacKinnon hit the left post early in the period before being robbed by Khudobin's glove on a wrist shot from the slot.
