Avs players after preliminary roundDuring the day-off of Olympics Ice Hockey Tournament Eurolanche brings you a summary about Avalanche players in Sochi.

Gabriel Landeskog, Paul Stastny, Matt Duchene and Semyon Varlamov are the Colorado Avalanche players at the Olympic Games in Sochi. Let’s sum up the preliminary round of the tournament.

Swedish Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog played all three games. Against Czech Republic he scored 1 assist, 2 penalty minutes and +2 in the +/- ranking. He spent 15 minutes and 16 seconds on ice and had one shot on the goal. His maximum ice-time was against Switzerland, he played 19 minutes and 7 seconds, but with no points in 1:0 win. In the last game of preliminary round Sweden faced Latvia. “Landy” played only 15 minutes and had -1 point. His team role is similar to what he do in Colorado. He is not much visible on ice, but he does his job really well.

Center Paul Stastny had a great start in the tournament. He scored a pair against Slovakia in the big US victory 7:1. In other games he didn’t score. He played 13 minutes and 46 seconds against Slovakia and he won 7 of 13 faceoffs. He played the most against team Russia – 13 mintues and 54 seconds, when he was used to win as much faceoffs as possible. He won 10 from 16 and he played a lot during penalty killing. Against Slovenia “Staz” had 5 shots on the goal, but with no points. He recorded just -1 point. His ice-time was 12 minutes and 19 seconds; he won 6 of total 12 faceoffs.

Canadian Matt Duchene joined the tournament in the second game of team Canada against Austria. Duchene plays unusually on the left wing in the line with “Ducks” Getzalf and Perry. “Dutchy” has no points yet and he recorded only 4 shots on the goal against Austria. In this game he played 14 minutes and 28 seconds. In both games Duchene had to take 2 faceoffs instead of Getzlaf. Against Austria he won just 1, against Finland both “puck drops”. Unfortunately, Duchene is still on a cold-streak and everyone is expecting his points.

Russian goalie Semyon Varlamov started in the net in 2 games – against Slovenia and Slovakia. Against Slovenia he faced 14 shots and had 12 saves. It was not ideal start for Varlamov into the tournament; therefore Sergei Bobrovsky was in the net against team USA. Varlamov was back in the net against team Slovakia. He eliminated all 27 shots and 2 shootouts and had a shutout. Altogether, Varlamov had 41 shots against and made 39 saves. His SVS is 95.12%, his GAA is 0.96. “Varly” is doing very good so far, as we are used from Colorado. It is not decided yet if he or Bobrovsky will be the starting goalie in the elimination rounds of the tournament.
