McLeod suspended 5 games by NHLThe NHL on Monday suspended Avalanche forward Cody McLeod five games without pay for his blindside hit on Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall last week.

McLeod was ejected after being given a five-minute major and a game misconduct penalty in the first period against Detroit on Oct. 17. The Red Wings went on to win that game 4-2 in Denver.

The NHL allowed McLeod an in-person meeting Monday in New York with NHL director of safety Brendan Shanahan, a former Red Wings player, before discipline was levied.

It was McLeod's first NHL suspension. He already missed Saturday's game against Buffalo under suspension. He will ose $29,487 in salary, which goes to the NHL Player's Emergency Fund.

McLeod crashed into Kronwall from behind, sending him into the corner boards, on the play. Kronwall was carried off the ice on a a stretcher and suffered a concussion and cuts to his ear.
