Avs win 3-1 over the Preds

Avs win 3-1 over the PredsAvs win and Downie starts a rivalry

The Avs second game of the season makes for a pretty good story. The Avs face the Preds in Colorado. You got Seth Jones who was all the talk with the Avs first overall for a good long time. You got the post let’s see what Roy does tonight stuff. Besides all that we all just want to see the same effort from the team.

The first period was statistically pretty boring. Both teams had some good chances. Both goalies made some good saves. Both teams hit the post. Finally near the end of the period the excitement ramps right up as the Avs score. P.A. Parenteau gets the goal. Jamie McGinn and Nathan MacKinnon get the assists. The period end shortly after with the Avs up 1-0. The first period ends with the Avs leading in shots by 13-10.

The second starts and the Avs take a penalty early. Varly makes some good saves and the Avs kill it off. After some more back and forth play the Avs score again. Patrick Bordeleau gets the goal. Nate Guenin get the first assists as his shot was redirected. Marc-Andre Cliché gets the secondary assist for his first NHL point ever. Things get chippy between the two teams as Downie lands a huge hit on a Josi. Downie goes to the box for it. The Avs do get a PP after Shea Weber gets a double minor on the play. The Preds kill off the penalty. Downie goes back to the box again as the Preds get the PP. The Preds score a goal to make it 2-1 just as the penalty expires. The Avs get a PP not to long after. They don’t score. With 40 seconds left in the period Avs get another PP. The second period ends with the Avs still on the PP and up 2-1. Avs also still hold the lead shot wise 25-17

The third starts with the Avs still on the PP for a minute twenty. The Avs cannot score on the PP. The Preds get a PP over their own shorty after. The Avs get called for too many men on the ice. The Avs kill it off once again. Then the Avs get a PP after Downie gets a stick in the face. Then Downie gets into some more trouble ends up back in the box. Duchene breaks past the D and gets hauled down to draw a penalty. The Avs once again go back on the PP for the fifth time in the game. Once again they do not score on the PP. The Avs get the 3-1 lead with an empty net goal late in the third. Parenteau gets the goal from Stastny and Mitchell. The Avs win the game 3-1 to open the season 2-0.

Things I noticed. The McGinn-Mack-PAP line is going to be good it looks like. Looks like McGinn could have a big year at this pace with those guys. Downie may have possibly started a new rivalry with the Preds. Varly had another good game. MacKinnon wins the first battle of what was a better pick. Mack had an assist and Jones finished the night a minus 1. Nate Guenin had another good game and is working hard to stick around. On to the next one!

How do you feel about MacKinnon over Jones now?
Always loved it
Better
Too early
