Malone, Varlamov lead Avs past Ducks

Semyon Varlamov made 37 saves and Brad Malone got the go-ahead goal with 11:33 left in the third, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 2-1 preseason victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday night.
Guillaume Desbiens opened the scoring for Colorado at 12:20 of the second period with a 45-foot wrist shot past Jonas Hiller's glove, following a turnover by forward Jakob Silfverberg in the Anaheim zone. Silfverberg left the game with 5:02 remaining because of an undisclosed injury.
Kyle Palmieri tied it 57 seconds into the third on a breakaway goal set up by defenseman Francois Beauchemin, who played his first game since reconstructive surgery on his right knee.
Hiller finished with 23 saves.
The Avalanche continues its preseason schedule Tuesday as it begins a home-and-home series against the Dallas Stars at Pepsi Center. Colorado will play at Dallas on Thursday night before wrapping up the preseason Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev., against the Los Angeles Kings.
