Avs on WC (3.): Varly´s debut

Avs on WC (3.): Varly´s debutAlong with the daily results, we also focus on Avs players at WC.

The third day of IIHF World Championship has passed and yet again Avs players were important parts of their respective teams.

In today´s first game played Thomas Pöck (France – Austria) and added one assist. This assist was to only one Austrian goal of the game. He also managed 4 shots on goal and had the longest time on ice in his team. Not even that stopped French forwards and France won this game 3-1.

Second match of today´s menu with Avs appearance was Germany-Russia. Russia won their first game against Latvia 6-0 with Bryzgalov in net, but for the clash against Germany, Semyon Varlamov was nominated as goalie nr. 1. Varlamov shut the door completely and allowed Germans to score only one goal. He had 26 successful saves and added 0.963 save percentage. He also got 2-min penalty for delaying the game.

Second game for team Canada in two days meant another start for Avs players Matt Duchene and Ryan O´Reilly. Duchene this time didn´t add any points, but he did score in shootouts once. Game was tied still after overtime, so it all went down to shootouts. It was Duchene´s goal, which kept Canada alive and led to continue in shootouts as his opponent Suri (Switzerland) scored and Canada was trailing by one. High pressure on Duchene didn´t seem to have any affect and he scored a beauty in cold blood. Shortly after that he got second and the third chance to score again, but did not score any more. Still he was the only player from team Canada who scored a goal in shootouts. Ryan O´Reilly contributed with one shot on goal only and Canada lost the game on shootouts.

Also USA played for the second time on this year´s World Championship and it was a game against Latvia. Yet again, this game was mostly about players from Denver. Captain Paul Stastny added another 2 points for 2 assists on his record, Matt Hunwick scored one goal and Erik Johnson had one assist and become the best scoring defender of this tournament. Aaron Palushaj did not accompany his team mates and didn’t score any points. Team USA won the game 4:1.

Last game on today´s list was also interesting from our point of view. Denmark faced Norway and what an exciting game this was! Norway was leading 2:0 after the 2nd period and it seemed like a done deal. But Danish players managed to score an equalizer and were almost grabbing overtime. That did not happen however and Norway won the game 3:2. Markus Lauridsen managed one shot on goal and added one minus point in +/- section.

Day 3 results:

France – Austria 3:1

Belarus – Slovenia 4:3

Germany – Russia 1:4

Switzerland – Canada 3:2 SO

Latvia – USA 1:4

Norway – Denmark 3:2
